When Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex first began appearing as a couple, it was obvious that they were deeply in love. Prince Harry seemed very protective of Meghan, even in the beginning stages of their relationship, and it was wonderful to see the two of them so happy.
After the royal wedding, however, things seemed to go downhill for them. Meghan found herself constantly being hounded by the British tabloids, and, more than once, Prince Harry felt that it was necessary to release statements in her defense.
Fans had expected Meghan and Prince Harry to move next door to Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge at Kensington Palace, and they surprised everyone by heading miles away to Windsor, supposedly to get out of the spotlight. The couple still found themselves being targeted by tabloids and photographers, and before long, they announced that they were stepping down from royal duties altogether, and “Megxit” was officially underway.
Meghan was suddenly thrust into the spotlight
Before meeting Prince Harry, Meghan was a successful actress, having gotten her big break on the legal drama Suits. She was famous in her own right, however, the attention that she received was nothing like what happened after joining the royal family.
While living in Toronto, Meghan was still able to go out and about without having to fear for her safety. News outlets didn’t report fake stories about the actress, and she was living a relatively peaceful life.
According to Mirror, after her wedding to Prince Harry, Meghan was dealing with online trolling, and her fame rose to levels that she never could have imagined. There is no doubt that it was overwhelming for her, especially since it was something that she never could have prepared herself for.
Leaving the royal family
Being a member of the royal family sounds like a dream come true, but for Meghan, it was anything but. Insider reports that Meghan and Prince Harry just did not enjoy being part of the world’s most famous family, and they were beyond tired of the relentless photographers and the news media that they had to deal with on a regular basis.
More than anything, the couple wanted privacy, and it was almost if they felt that they would never get that while living in the United Kingdom. Early in 2020, Meghan and Prince Harry made the surprising announcement that they would be leaving the royal family, and they spent some time in Vancouver before finally heading to LA, where they are currently staying.
Meghan Markle felt ‘unprotected’ by the monarchy
So, why is it that Meghan felt “unprotected?” Well, she was dealing with all sorts of harassment.
Contents of a personal letter to her father were leaked to the media, and Meghan felt that her privacy was violated. Meghan even said in an interview that royal life was not “fair,” and that she felt harassed, and wasn’t doing good at all.
By calling out the monarchy, Meghan is calling out its leader: Queen Elizabeth. One could argue she’s also calling out the heirs to Queen Elizabeth’s throne too: Prince Charles and Prince William.
It’s a bold move on Meghan’s part, but royal family fans are on her side. They see the disconnect between how the monarchy responded to Prince Andrew’s scandal, reports of Kate’s “baby botox,” and even, more recently, a Tatler story about Kate being stressed.
One can argue Kate is the future queen consort, therefore the palace prioritizes the reports around her. But that still doesn’t explain the support for Prince Andrew. The disconnect has royal family fans supporting Meghan’s feelings.
